As I humbly accept the NCAA President's Gerald R. Ford Award, I am reminded of the journey that began on a college campus and led me to the global stage. From the early mornings on the water with the rowing team to the halls of the International Olympic Committee, each stroke, each decision was aimed at fostering inclusivity, championing the rights of athletes, and nurturing the seeds of opportunity.
This award is not just a recognition of my journey but a testament to the power of sport as a unifier and a catalyst for change. It honors the collective efforts of countless individuals dedicated to the Olympic movement, to advancing women's sports, and to nurturing the next generation of athletes through organizations like the LA84 Foundation. As I reflect on this honor, my heart is filled with gratitude for every mentor, teammate, and community member who has been part of this incredible voyage. Together, we've navigated the challenges, celebrated the triumphs, and, most importantly, kept the doors wide open for those who will follow. The work continues, and this recognition fuels my commitment to ensuring that the spirit of fairness, equality, and global camaraderie prevails in every arena. Here's to the journey ahead, the lives we'll touch, and the world we'll shape together. Thank you to the NCAA for this profound honor. #GeraldRFordAward #NCAA #Advocacy #InclusivityInSports

Reflecting on the journey captured so eloquently by VoyageLA Magazine fills me with immense gratitude. From the serendipitous moments on the campus of Connecticut College that led me to rowing, to the legal battles fought for the rights of athletes and the pursuit of social justice, each chapter of my story has been driven by the conviction that one can indeed be the change they wish to see in the world.
A heartfelt thank you to Sid Reddy, Grayce McCormick, and the entire editorial team at @VoyageLA for featuring my story and allowing me to share the milestones, the challenges, and the triumphs. This piece is not just a reflection of my journey but a tribute to the indomitable spirit of every individual who has been part of it – my family, mentors, friends, and the Benevolent Syndicate who stood by me in the darkest of times. As I continue my work within the Olympic Movement and beyond, I am reminded that our actions, no matter how small, can ripple through generations. Let's all continue to be catalysts for positive change, in honor of those who paved the way and for the sake of those who will follow. To read the full interview, head over to @VoyageLA. Dr. King's dream, courage, and eloquence continue to inspire us to work tirelessly towards a world where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
In my journey as an attorney, Olympic medalist, and advocate for equity in sports and beyond, Dr. King's principles have been a guiding light. His belief in the power of peaceful protest and the importance of standing up for what is right resonate deeply in today's world. As we reflect on his monumental contributions, let's also commit to being agents of change in our communities. Let's embrace the spirit of unity and work collectively to build a society that reflects the ideals Dr. King so passionately fought for. #MLKDay2024 #Equality #Justice #LegacyOfHope |
